any other penguin lovers out there?  how’d you get started?  how do you cope with the AWESOMENESS of it all?

honestly I’m kind of starting this thread hoping it’ll kick my butt into gear.  I ran suse since it was 7x, but then bought an apple laptop with os X and it’s what i’ve been using mainly.  i’ve got my original computer running linux as a myth box, but that’s not terribly smart.  i need to divorce myself from itunes and install linux on the laptop but i need inspiration :) gimp runs slow on os x, the way i’ve got it set up now.

I’ve an old box I’ve been meaning to set up as a myth _forever_. I just never get the time to do it.

My first intro to Linux was in my soph. college courses. It was scary then, but now I buzz around it in work with such ease it’s hard to remember why it was intimidating.

At home I mostly just use a Knopix or Ubuntu Live. I’m also dieing to see if I can build my own CD distro with LAMP to use as an insta-portfolio for my web projects. Alas, its that time thing again.

So many neat things can be done with Linux :)

I used Linux a bit back in college. My best friend (male) is a Linux Guru.  I actually got invited to a lot of the Linux events as a “booth babe.” But I never went lol.

One of the problems I had with Linux was that Gimp (at the time) was just not as strong a program as Adobe or Corel Draw.  Has it improved?

I like gimp a lot better than photoshop now, I think it’s more usable and it’s got some nice flexible features.

in terms of vector capabilities… eh, it’s improved.  you can at least create and save paths now!  but it’s not corel draw or freehand by any stretch of the imagination.

I never could get into Gimp. I played with it some but I was raised on Macromedia & Adobe. It’s like trying to sell a Suzuki to a Chevy Man.

Try Inkscape for vector capabilities; it’s actually pretty sweet.

I have a Ubuntu dual-boot on my laptop and desktop, but haven’t been using it much.  I like it, but there is certain software I use a LOT (like CorelDRAW incidentally) that is Windows only.  So I keep using Windows.

i dual boot os x and ubuntu on both my laptop and desktop. i prefer ubuntu for programming and other homework (i’m a computer science major), but i tend to stick with mac for any of my freelance graphic design work, etc.
