I wear four inch heels to technical conferences because then I am taller than all of the men, and I think they find it intimidating.

Wow, that makes me feel good.  I am naturally 5’10 and feel like I can’t wear high heeled shoes because I am already so tall.  I do like being tall.  I wonder if it intimidates more men than I think…

I am new to programming and computer science.  I recently took an introductory class to Visual Basic and almost failed it if it weren’t for my software engineer boyfriend.  I am starting to learn C++ and have heard that it is easier to learn and after you learn it, you can learn any other language easy.

@JBird: What languages are better to learn on is a fairly subjective topic, you can see a fair bit of discussion on it at Stack Overflow but, the core concepts are the hard part and once you start to understand how the computer thinks and works and you understand the reasons for various patterns and practices you will be able to float from language to language as needed/desired.

C++ is good, as is traditional C because they force you to learn a lot about the lower levels of computers that some school-created corporate developers don’t know (and should) and you can take those things into consideration even in newer languages that take care of a lot of the plumbing for you.  Some people prefer starting at the bottom and working up to the higher level languages and some people find it easier to learn core concepts in higher level languages and then work their way down to the nitty gritty details, but, honestly, understanding vocabulary, flow control, scope, and encapsulation/reuse will put you on the path to greatness, the languages are just that: different words to say the same things.
