I just noticed that none of us have our photos up, I was just wondering why?  It might be a commentary on the safety women feel in the anonymity of the internet, but I wanted to pose it as a possible topic.  I don’t really want to put my photo up because I vent about work, but maybe we could think of a way to make the photos anonymous too, like here are the members’ photos but they are not by their screen names, what do you think?

Photos on the internet is a tricky thing for me.  Once you post the picture you have lost control over it.  You no longer have any say, really, in who views it, copies, or modifies it or what they do with it later.  I have not found an acceptable solution so for the most part I just don’t post pictures of myself or my family.  There have been times when I felt overly constrained by this self-imposed restriction.  However, my current line of study is in computer forensics, so I have seen/heard about all the dreadful things that can be and have been done with photos.

This is one of those times when I think it would be useful to come up with use cases of what someone with nefarious intentions might do or could do with photos posts and then develop solutions to counter these use cases.

I would be thrilled if I could feel confident about posting photos!  I know many moms especially that love to share photos of their kids.  I would feel even better if we developed a way to make the average internet user less vulnerable too.

You know, I agree.  I also feel that professionally speaking, I don’t want people to want to work with me (on some of the networking sites, they have a photo option) just because they think I am pretty or good looking or whatever.  I want them to work with me for my skill set and my intelligence, not to mention that I am good at what I do.  On this website, it’s not really about getting work, more about getting support as a woman in a “man’s field”, but I also feel strange about posting my photo on the internet.  It’s a quandry, but the girls on this site are smart, we should put our heads together and find out a way to make sure it’s safe...I wonder how we could do that…

I’ve tried uploading my picture a bunch of times. My pictures meet the upload requirements, but it never completes. I emailed Admin on it a couple weeks ago and they mentioned they were working on it.

Here’s my pictures:
the [ img ] (without spaces) doesn’t work on here either.

I would have to agree - I normally don’t upload a picture of my self - I use an avatar and that is it. To many times people do irrational things to others and the less of yourself you have out there the better.

I think I figured this one out… The size restriction is 500x800 pixels, which is a vertical photograph.  The syustem would not accept my horizontal picture either until I reduced the width to less than 500.  I don’t know if this is the source of the problem, or just random good luck on my part, but it is worth a try.

I only have 2 somewhat older pictures available to me at the moment, but I thought I’d pose a question with them; Long hair or short? (please pardon the bird)

Long
Short

Nothing between the two works at all, so it’s short right now and I’ve thought about going long again, but I have to struggle through unmanageability to get there.

I say the Long hair.  Especially since it’s curly.  You’re cute.

I cannot seem to get my pictures uploaded either.  Here is a picture of me on the Navajo reservation with a travel class.  http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo166/JBirdd1x/DSCN5618.jpg

Well thanks much folks; I’m in the process of growing it out. Going through that annoying stage where nothing is quite right, but I’m almost there. Maybe I’ll post a more modern one when it gets there.

hi everyone! just joined the community and it seems awesome so far!

user beware! when you upload pictures and tag users, Internet companies have the ability to trace you and basically track your life and events. i know it sounds like a conspiracies theory but there is some truth to it. you can Google it :D

have a great day everyone!

I’m personally fairly interested in conspiracy theories, but for this particular instance I’m not terribly concerned. I don’t post things on the internet without acknowledging the possibility that it will be used in ways I hadn’t previously conceived. As it stands, if the companies can start doing a better job pleasing me then I’m super interested, because right now corporate mentality sickens me. What any company other than a security company/agency would want with my information beyond using it to improve their sales is beyond me, but hey… have at it! When it comes to the security agencies and the like, if there’s cause to be concerned they don’t need me to post a picture on the internet to figure out what I do on a daily basis. I carry a cell phone and use a check card, that alone makes it pretty easy to find me. There’s also the good ol ‘ argument that worrying about things like this implies you have something to hide, though if you look at Mr. Franklin’s quote in my sig I’m sure you’ll realize I’m not of this disposition.

Just to make life easier for them, the pictures a couple years apart, one was taken at Long Island Islip Macarthur Airport getting ready to depart and I believe the other was taken on a Hampton Jitney bus from Montauk to Manhattan. Both were taken during trips to visit family. I could have used a cheaper PSP since I was broke but both trips would have benefited from one :P
