The Kindle is a ebook reader with virtual paper technology to make it easier to read.  I would like to get one eventually.
It seems way overpriced to me, and some say to wait till they come out with a newer one, say with color.
Any thoughts/opinions?
Thanks!

I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever be able to read for long periods of time on a digital medium.  I guess if they can make electronic paper as easy on the eyes as real paper I will have to give it a try - so does the Kindle do it? Anyone know? Maybe then it would be worth the money…

I don’t have any answers either, but I do read far too much on abrasive computer screens and it would be nice to be able to take some of my reading in hand; is it only for purchased eBooks, or can it be used with text that isn’t behind a DRM scheme? I’d love to read my RSS feeds at the coffee shop instead of at my desk.

Apparently the kindle uses a new type of paper & ink-like screen technology. Supposedly making it easier to read.  The current kindle’s screen does not come in color.  I am not sure, but I think the kindle only uses DRM ebooks, from the kindle store, unfortunately.  Although, I did read that from a regular computer you can send your own content to then have it converted and emailed back to your pc. Then via usb put your own content onto the Kindle.
I hope this helped!

Thanks for the details; seems a bit of a pain considering I would have to do all that to put content on something *I* paid for… kinda like the Apple Store telling you what apps you can and can’t have on your iPhone, what ever happened to consumer choice? It seems like everybody has switched marketing tactics from “Make it better and we’ll get more customers” to “Once we get customers make sure they can’t go anywhere else to spend their money.” Mais c’est la vie je suppose.

I’ve been using a Kindle since it came out, and it’s a device I fell more in love with the more I used it. It certainly has it’s issues. It’s a first generation device. The buttons are placed wrong and it’s too easy to turn the page by accident. They got the reading experience right, though. I can curl up with it and not miss having an actual book in my hands. The E Ink makes it easy to read. My eyes don’t get strained from reading for a long time.

Also, Sony’s eReader was officially announced today and it has touch screen.

I find this topic really interesting as i’m an avid book reader yet a lover of technology. The idea of having hundreds of books available in my handbag is very appealing but I would be concerned about using it in public in case it got stolen or in case I lost it. Then there’s the physicality of reading a physical book, the feeling of the pages, the anticipation whilst you turn each page, the smell of the fresh paper… and no worries about getting suntan lotion, coffee, etc spilt on it. I also get personal enjoyment of seeing my books on a shelf, all in varying colours and sizes, on display in my home for friends and family to also see and share and provide a talking point. For me The Kindle could not replicate these interactions and emotions.

I agree with lisa.  I don’t know if I could completely convert myself to reading digitized books.  There is just *something* about the smell and texture of a physical book that I would miss.  I would rather curl up in front of a fireplace with a book instead of an electronic gadget.  Maybe I’m weird, lol.

I would consider a Kindle (or any other e-reader) if and when the price dropped.  It’d be nice for magazines, newspapers, and the occasional random book.

I actually am confortable reading through an e-reader than holding a book. I’m interested in this one.

I have a Kindle that was a tech hand-me-down from my dad. It’s the smaller version, and I love using it. My only issues are that I can’t take it in the bath (Where I tend to do most my reading), and the cover is somewhat awkward. Otherwise its a great device, and the screen never hurts my eyes. What with the E-ink, there’s no glare to upset your eyes, even after extended reading. Beyond that, it stays charged for immense periods of time, as it doesn’t use power to stay on - power is only used when a page is turned, then the device turns off to save energy. I’m not sure if that’s been said already, but it’s a huge bonus in my eyes.

I do like the fact that you can read it in the sunlight and it doesnt glare. Im pretty sure the kindle will get smaller and more affordable over time because more and more physical newspapers will vanish due to the economic crunch, paving the way. Add nationwide free wireless to the mix and things will rock. Sweet.

Two of my co-workers have a Kindle and bring them to work on a regular bases.  The screen is contrasted to simulate a natural page of a regular book.  There is no back light so if you want to read in the dark you have to have a book light or a lamp.  You can even add notes to the pages.  I personally would think it would be groovy to be able to carry around a bunch of text books all in one small digital device.  If I had the money I would totally buy one.  It also reminds me of the data pads in star trek.

While the apple ipad is coming out soon and they have similar features as well so I’d imagine they’ll have to lower their price since they are no where near as functional as apple ipad
